How We Empower Waste Reclamation for Communities

Our Goals

•Identify systemic breakdowns and bottlenecks in current reclamation practices, development of community solutions and participation

•Organize and implement street and waterfront cleanups, sorting out plastic waste and reclaiming it

•Research and development of new processes dealing with plastics which are not easily recycled within the current system (i.e. EPS, EPE, films, LDPE)

•Educational activities centered around reclamation of plastic waste, information about plastics and uses, workshops for individuals and organizations.

•Examine and research local policies to facilitate efforts for positive progress in plastics reclamation (i.e.cost of licensing, requirements to collect and process legally, reclamation business development)

•Facilitate and share circular processes that utilize waste as a raw material in the arts, design, and construction

•Develop network of corporate, municipal, and individual partners

•Sales of cleaned, sorted bulk plastics in bulk

•Sales of sorted, shredded plastic for makers, artists, and manufacturers

•Sales of manufactured building materials for makers and companies: beams, dowels, sheets

•Pop-ups and activities in partnership with corporate, municipal, and other non-profit organizations

•Impliment a mobile platform for demonstrating circular practices

Economic Development and Green Jobs

Waste disproportionately ends up in lower income communities. We strive to turn waste into a source of income and growth for affected communities, addressing both climate justice and income inequality.

Current Initiatives

Reclamation Station & Sheet Press Center

We are seeking funding to lease and outfit an industrial workspace in New York City to operate a sheet-press and extrusion equipment using locally collected post-consumer plastic waste. The facility will accept mixed HDPE/LDPE/PP feedstock, reduce plastic waste leakage, create local green jobs, and produce recycled plastic sheet products for construction, retail, and municipal customers. In addition, we will create educational programs and job training to enhance community participation. We are also prepared to act as a plastic redemption center for the local community to further encourage circular material practices and provide a measure of economic empowerment.

Community Cleanup Sorting & Materials Recovery Team (NYC)

Across New York City, hundreds of volunteer cleanups remove tons of litter each year—but most events don’t separate recyclable metal, glass, and rigid plastics (MGP). As a result, a large share of recyclable material is bagged as trash and disposed, rather than captured for recycling or upcycled into useful products. We aim to help close the loop on this recoverable material and provide support to clean up efforts that are doing this good work but don’t have the capacity to separate with their current program. We propose a “Cleanup Sorting & Materials Recovery Team” that:

  • attends community cleanups

  • sets up on-site sorting stations and trains volunteers,

  • accompanies volunteers to divert the MGP

  • transports recovered MGP—especially HDPE and PP—to a small-scale circular manufacturing pipeline.
